How to Exhibit Leadership and Creativity in a Multicultural Work Environment
On September 27, 2019, the New York Youth Roundtable and the International Leadership Foundation hosted a pivotal lecture in Manhattan titled "How to Exhibit Leadership and Creativity in a Multicultural Work Environment." The session was led by Dr. Erika Sauer, a seasoned leadership consultant and Director at AmCham New York, who is well-published in academic journals and specializes in personal leadership development and organizational consulting.
Dr. Sauer, who has lived in various countries due to her husband Kai Sauer's diplomatic career, used her international experience to enrich the discussion. The workshop began with an engaging introduction using a visual display of diverse leadership styles evolving over time. Notable was an impactful image of former Finnish President Tarja Halonen disguised as a homeless person for a Salvation Army fundraising campaign.
Dr. Sauer explored different leadership models through a quadrant model: "Do things together," "Do things fast," "Do things right," and "Do things together," highlighting various management styles and corporate cultures.
Participants actively shared the management practices prevalent in their workplaces, discussing how to receive and implement feedback positively and exploring management styles across different cultures.
A key part of the workshop was building trust while maintaining professionalism in the workplace. Dr. Sauer creatively facilitated a role-playing activity that involved participants interviewing each other, with interviewers tasked with gathering information and noting body language cues to detect deceit, enhancing their understanding of trust-building and communication.
The event concluded with insightful remarks by Dr. Ma Yong, Deputy Director and Chief Risk Officer at the Bank of China New York, who summarized the leadership training session, marking a successful close to a day of intensive learning and networking. The workshop not only provided practical tools for personal leadership growth but also fostered a deeper understanding of effective leadership in today’s multicultural work settings.

随后,Dr.Sauer重点讲解了领导力模式的象限模型,分别为“Do things together”、“Do things fast”、”Do things right”、“Do things together”,代表着不同的管理模式和企业文化。
